This is not legal advice. Obligations differ by industry, employer size and the work being done, and they change. Confirm what applies to you against the current Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, and your WCB account requirements. What we can tell you precisely is what Muster records and how long it keeps it - that is the column on the right.
What you are expected to doWhat Muster producesWhere it lives
Assess hazards before work starts
A hazard assessment for the site and the task, done before the job and repeated when conditions change.
A dated FLHA per crew, listing the hazards and the controls, signed by the person who released it. Changing it mid-shift raises a re-check for everyone who already signed. See the FLHA template and what each field is for. FLHA
Involve workers in the assessment
Workers must be informed of the hazards and take part in identifying them.
Every crew member signs today's FLHA before their safety check opens. No FLHA, no checks - the database refuses the check, so it cannot be skipped by working around the app. FLHA · Safety checks
Confirm workers are fit and briefed each shift
Evidence that the people on site were ready for the work that day.
A per-worker daily check, scored, timestamped, tied to that day's duties. One per person per day, enforced in the database rather than by convention. Safety checks
Report and investigate incidents
Record what happened, act on it, and be able to show what you did.
An incident record with severity, location, photos and the corrective action attached to it - problem and fix on one line, with an owner and a due date. Safety log
Act on hazards workers report
A worker who raises a concern must see it go somewhere.
Hazard reports with a review chain: submitted, reviewed, escalated, actioned, resolved. Every state change is stamped with who and when. Safety log
Hold safety meetings and record them
Minutes, attendance, and the actions that came out of the meeting.
A meeting record that pulls the period's incidents and hazards with their corrective actions, plus attendance signatures. Once finalised the database refuses any edit. Meetings
Track training and certification currency
Know who holds what ticket and when it expires.
Per-worker certification records with expiry dates and email alerts before they lapse. Training
Account for everyone in an emergency
Know who is on site and confirm they are safe.
Site-scoped emergency alerts with a live muster board: who has acknowledged, who has not, who is still unaccounted for. Emergency alerts
Keep the records, and be able to produce them
Retention, and getting them out when someone asks.
Records stay in your workspace and export as PDF or CSV. The audit log is append-only: nobody in your company can edit or delete an entry, including the owner - the database rejects the write. Reports · Audit log
What Muster does not do. It does not write your health and safety program, file your WCB paperwork, or replace a competent supervisor. It records what your crew did and makes that record hard to argue with. If a vendor tells you software makes you compliant, they are selling you something.
